Beta 2025:
A Collaborative, Two-Semester Unity Game Development Project
In my “Media Informatics & Interactive Entertainment” program at Mittweida University of Applied Sciences, every cohort takes part in a project called “Beta” during the fourth and fifth semesters. Together with the entire Media Informatics year, we develop a game from scratch in Unity. The project is fully student-organized. At the end of each cycle, the game is officially released - accompanied by a live release show on Twitch, produced at the level of a professional TV broadcast.
The goal of the project is to simulate the daily workflow of an actual game development studio as closely as possible. All students are assigned to different teams with a clear hierarchy, each taking on specific responsibilities.
In my 2025 cohort, our departments—and thus the project structure—were as follows: Project Management (PM), Event Management (EVM), Game Design (GD), Tech, Art, and Engine.
Our hierarchy evolved over time, but the core roles within each department were: Department Head, Project Manager, and Developer.
Scoop as a Project Manager?
I initially took on the role of one of the Project Managers. During the first half of the project, this meant assigning tasks to the developers in my designated department (in my case, Engine) and looking after their general well-being. As PMs, we also acted as the central communication link between developers and the Department Head, as well as between our own department and others. We served as contact points for emotional or interpersonal issues that arose within the project context. For technical problems, we connected students with the right experts.
At the beginning of the second half of the project, the structure, communication routes, and hierarchy were reorganized completely. As a result, I moved into a new role within the PM department—one so new that it didn’t even have an official name. I essentially climbed the hierarchy and began assisting the PM Head, the person responsible for overseeing the entire organizational side of the project—basically the “president” of the whole operation. My new role was therefore comparable to that of a vice president.
I supported the PM Head by taking over parts of his workload. Beyond acting as a mediator, I now also had autonomy and authority within the scope of the project. In addition to my previous responsibilities, I had become part of the project leadership itself.
I completed the project — and thus also the module within my degree program — with a final grade of 1.0.
We need Motion
Alongside my PM work, I also volunteered for our social media team, contributing to the online presence of both the development process and the game itself—making me part of the EVM department as well. I started by creating intro and outro animations for short-format videos (mainly Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts). Later, I took over all tasks related to motion design, including producing every animation used in the release livestream. A selection of my work can be found on this page.
